What It Is Minimalist Android home screen launcher featuring grouped section categories and a Gaussian wave scroller.
Core Problem & Solution Modern launchers suffer from cognitive overload and clumsy alphabet scrollers. Section Launcher uses a mathematical Gaussian distribution curve for smooth index zooming and local-first Room SQLite persistence.

Key Highlights Gaussian wave scroller physics, automated zero-quota Play Store release pipeline, browser-based layout emulator.

Section Launcher is a minimalist Android launcher built with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Room SQLite. Beyond its core utility as an intentional home screen environment, Section Launcher serves as the proven reference implementation for Play Store release automation, establishing patterns copied across all Android projects in Andrea's portfolio.

1. System Vision & Mathematical Wave Scroller

The primary ergonomic innovation of Section Launcher is its Gaussian wave scroller:

  • Continuous Gaussian Scale Distribution: Instead of a jarring binary jump when scrolling through alphabetized sections, the launcher evaluates a real-time Gaussian bell curve centered on the touch point. Nearby section headers smoothly scale and separate, allowing precise single-thumb jumping to any app section.
  • 60 FPS Jetpack Compose Canvas: Rendered directly via Compose canvas with derived state optimizations, ensuring zero frame drops even on budget Android devices.
  • Dynamic Category Grouping: Apps automatically classify into user-defined sections (Work, Daily, Games, Utilities) with instant drag-and-drop reassignment.

2. Local-First Room Persistence & Lifecycle Handling

  • Room SQLite Architecture: App metadata, package launch counts, custom section assignments, and hidden app lists persist locally in an encrypted Room SQLite database.
  • Package Broadcast Receivers: System broadcast listeners (ACTION_PACKAGE_ADDED, ACTION_PACKAGE_REMOVED) reactively invalidate internal state and update the Room database without requiring full app re-indexing.
  • Memory & Battery Equity: Runs with zero background telemetry, maintaining under 35MB of RAM residency and eliminating background wake-locks.

3. Reference Zero-Quota Play Store Release Pipeline

Section Launcher established the standard release automation pipeline now utilized across the estate:

[ Local Preflight Validation ] โ”€โ”€โ–บ ( lintKotlin, testReleaseUnitTest, verifyAab )

[ Managed Staged Release ] โ”€โ”€โ–บ ( Google Play Console Internal Track )
  • Zero-SDK Direct Deployment: Automated deployment uses direct Google Play Developer API token authentication, bypassing heavy third-party CI quotas and vendor lock-in.
  • Deterministic Version Code Generation: Automated build scripts derive monotonic Android versionCode and semantic versionName directly from git history.
  • Preflight Verification Gates: Mandatory local validation passes ensure signed release bundles (.aab) comply with 64-bit architecture and Target SDK 36 requirements before store ingestion.

4. In-Browser Phone Mockup Architecture

To demonstrate the launcher's layout engine without requiring an Android device, a standalone marketing site was built featuring a simulated phone:

  • Browser-Ported Layout Math: Implemented the exact Gaussian wave scroller formula in vanilla JavaScript/Canvas, allowing prospective users to test the thumb ergonomics directly on desktop or mobile browsers.
  • Zero-Dependency Lightweight Delivery: Pure static delivery loading in under 200ms with no heavyweight frameworks.

5. Reproducible Native-UI Promotional Media

The screenshot fixture also produces a 24-second promotional video directly
from the real Jetpack Compose UI under Robolectric native graphics. No emulator
or phone recording is required: seeded app data, a fixed clock and offline
weather make the scene repeatable, while controlled touch events drive the
actual wave scroller. Frames stream into FFmpeg at 30 fps.

The current approved composition is a 24-second dark-mode narrated cut demonstrating three real section configurations with
distinct wallpapers, quick letter filtering with visibly changing app results,
and large brand cards using the actual launcher icon. Full-duration frame sheets
and enlarged action samples complement automated decoding and fixture tests.

The video is available through the Section Launcher press gallery
and the publisher's house-ad gallery.
The delivery pipeline registers the original checksum and derives Theora and
H.264 video, a poster and a lightweight review preview. Source code and scene
configuration are versioned; generated media is not. A checksum-verified restore
step preserves deployment reproducibility without committing video binaries.
